How the IMP-ternship Benefits Students
Recently internships have become quite the hot topic in the media. Starting first with Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson staring in the movie "The Internship" (which is a hilarious comedy I highly recommend you see.) Then second, when Judge William H. Pauley III ruled that internships are an easy way for business to exploit students and gain free labour. Speaking as an intern who is currently in the middle of completing her second unpaid internship, here is my perspective on the subject:
I perceive internships as a golden opportunity for students. They are a great way for recent graduates to gain experience. After I graduated college I had a diploma in hand and zero hours of experience in my field. An internship provided me with a great opportunity to gain some real world working experience.
When you start working as an intern, you get to put the schooling you received to the test. It's a chance for you to prove that you're qualified and to show that you can perform in the role you've been given. It is also an easy way to find out if this is the right field for you. If you are happy and enjoy the work you are doing, especially while doing it for free; you know it's the right job for you. Generally internships are short-term, so if you don't like it, you're not stuck in a long term position.
Another benefit of internships is the transition it helps you create, as you move from student to working professional. Internships are also a great way of networking with people in your industry. You never know who you'll meet, or who could help you land a job in the future. Working alongside industry professionals can motivate you to perform exceptionally well during your internship.
Think of an internship as a very long interview process. The company is giving you a trial run and you are doing the same. Most businesses view interns as potential employees. An internship is a way for a company to test a student. If they like what they see, they may ask them to continue working with the company full-time. The goal for all interns is to stand out during your time with company and hope they want to hire you at the end of your term with them.
Internships are a fabulous way to get a letter of reference and have some experience to add to your resume. I would highly recommend to any students who have recently graduated, to apply at IMP Canada to become an IMP-tern. IMP Canada offers an excellent intern program, letting you tackle real client work alongside the friendly staff. Plus the coffee here is excellent! At the end of the day completing an internship can give you a competitive edge over other applicants while applying for jobs. The more experience you gather; the more experienced you become.
